Diaper Tricycle
After doing a couple of diaper cakes for different people, I decided to try my hand at something different for my co-workers upcoming baby shower... a diaper tricycle! There weren't a lot of tutorials online, but I did find a lot of pictures of different tricycles that I worked off of.
Supplies you'll need:
- a 50 count pack of size 1 diapers (I used Target brand, they have a pattern to them)
- Ribbon
- Rubber bands (a couple different sizes)
- Baby Bottle (I used one of the smaller ones)
- Pair of mittens or socks
- 2 cotton receiving blankets
- 1 bib, hat or washcloth
- 1 toilet paper and 1 paper towel tube
Supplies you'll need:
- a 50 count pack of size 1 diapers (I used Target brand, they have a pattern to them)
- Ribbon
- Rubber bands (a couple different sizes)
- Baby Bottle (I used one of the smaller ones)
- Pair of mittens or socks
- 2 cotton receiving blankets
- 1 bib, hat or washcloth
- 1 toilet paper and 1 paper towel tube
- Start by making the 3 wheels to the bike. All 3 are made the same way, just make the front one with more diapers then the back 2. Form the front wheel by fanning out a stack of about 22 diapers (you can use more or less depending on how big you want it to be) end to end.
- Set the stack up on it's side and wrap it around the toilet paper tube and secure with a tight rubber band. In the second picture where my first finger is, that's where the toilet paper tube would go. Make sure the rubber band keeps the tire nice and tight, but not so tight that you can't get the tube out if you need to (more important in the back wheels)
- Repeat steps 1 and 2 to form the back wheels, but only use about 10-12 diapers and shape them around the paper towel tube. You want to make sure the wheels are tight enough that they don't come apart when you take the tube out of the middle, so you can use the same tube to shape both wheels. The front wheel comes out perfectly round, the back ones tend to have a flat spot in them, that's okay, just make sure those stay on the bottom!
- Wrap ribbon around all three tires to cover the rubber bands. I used just a small dot of hot glue to keep the ribbon secure, but you can use a small safety pin if you don't want to ruin any of the diapers.
- Put the two back tires on either of the paper towel tube and place the front tire right in between. Run a length of ribbon through the toilet paper tube and then through the paper towel tube. Tie it in a knot to secure the 3 wheels together and slide the knot back into the paper towel tube to hide it.
- Cover the paper towel tube with either a hat, a washcloth or a bib. Tuck the ends of it into the diaper center to secure. it. I tried using removable glue dots, but they didn't hold to the fabric well enough, so I just tucked the ends in and it's working just fine.
- Set the baby bottle on top of the front wheel, and secure with a knotted piece of ribbon. This is going to help you form your handlebars. They can get a little tricky.
- Start by folding a receiving blanket in half lengthwise, then in half again the opposite direction. Roll it up lengthwise, as tightly as possible. Secure both ends with rubber bands.
- Put the very bottom of the receiving blanket in the toilet paper tubes and fold them right where they meet right above the bottle. I used a rubber band on each handle bar to keep them bent at the top. I covered those rubber bands with the green polka dot ribbon. (I ended up using the curly ribbon to cover the front of the handle bars because I didn't like how the ribbon looked)
- Then I took a third rubber band to keep them touching right above the bottle. (Sorry if that doesn't make any sense, it will when you start playing with it!)
- Once they are put together, simply slide the ends back into the toilet paper tubes and they should stay put on their own. Slide either mittens or socks over the ends to cover the rubber bands and they are done!
- Add a stuffed animal of some kind to be the driver of the tricycle and you're finished!
